1900 women undergo self defence training programme

New Delhi, June 07: Initiated in the wake of a spurt in incidents of assaults on women in the capital in December last, the Delhi Police's self-defence training programme has "trained" 1900 women till date.

The 1900 mark was crossed today with a batch of 300 women, who were handed over the merit certificate by deputy chairperson of Rajya Sabha Najma Heptullah, successfully completing the training.

Lauding the efforts of Delhi Police, organisers of the training programme, Heptulla said that such training not only made women physically stronger but also instilled confidence in them to deal with physical assault.

Delhi Police Commissioner R S Gupta said that he was enthralled by the response to the training, which was started following a spurt in cases of assault on young girls in the Capital.

A team of trained policewomen has been deployed in the college campuses and other sensitive areas and they were able to apprehend those indulging in eve-teasing.

The crime against women cell has been providing training to women in 37 different institutions and the profile of those trained there vary from a nine year old girl to a 56-year-old housewife.

Out of the 1900 trainees, 1300 are in the age group of 17-25 years while 14 are above the age of 35. In eight cases both mother and daughter have undergone the training programme.
