Chautala said that he would be forced to take such a drastic step, owing the great resentment among the people of Haryana, who would be deprived of their share of water after Punjab government’s unilateral decision. He feared that such actions would put a question mark over the federal structure of the country.
The CM said that if this matter is not sorted out soon, then people in Delhi would suffer as Haryana is would take any step to protect the rights of its people.

Earlier today, all the 19 Congress MLAs in Haryana submitted their resignations to party's state unit president Bhajan Lal protesting annulling of all water sharing agreements by the Congress government in Punjab with Haryana and other neighbouring states.

Haryana Congress chief Bhajan Lal told reporters, "The MLAs have submitted their resignations to me but I will not act in haste.”

Bhajan Lal, after chairing a meeting of party MLAs that was also attended by three Congress MPs from the state, said if ruling INLD legislators decide to resign on the issue, then Congress members would be the first to do it.

Describing the Sutlej-Yamuna Link canal as "lifeline of Haryana", he said all parties must unite on the issue to protect the state's interests.
