Government mismanaging economy: BJP

The BJP on Wednesday accused the government of mismanaging the economy and questioned why the government is unable to control the price rise.

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday accused the government of mismanaging the economy and questioned why the government is unable to control the price rise.

"Prices of onion, petrol and beer are the same, Rs 75-80, and government of the day does not know how to control inflation," BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said while participating in a debate on the economy in the Rajya Sabha.

"The agriculture minister claims every day we have an abundance of grain. If there is abundance, what is causing the price rise? It is gross mismanagement of economy," he said.

The BJP leader said this was despite Prime Minister Manmohan Singh being an eminent economist.

"The problem is the prime minister is in the office but not in authority," he said.

"Crony capitalism has come to rule".

Participating in the debate, Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar said government was taking steps to control price rise.

"We remember bringing down the BJP government in Delhi over onion prices. If you think you can do the same, you are dreaming. Government is taking steps to contain inflation," he said.
