Much-awaited Gorshkov handed over to India Navy

Moscow, Mar 09: The Admiral Gorshkov aircraft carrier was today handed over to the Indian Navy by Russia at an impressive ceremony at the Sevmash shipyard at Severodvinsk.

After the signing ceremony, Russian Deputy Defence Minister Colonel-General A M Moskovsky handed over the carrier to Indian ambassador to Russia K Raghunath, a press release from the embassy said.

Now the Russian side will start the retrofitting of the carrier to be completed within 52 months after which it will be inducted into the Indian Navy.

The agreement for the acquisition of the 45,000-tonne Gorshkov was signed on October 4, 2000 in New Delhi.

During the visit of Russian Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov to New Delhi in January this year, 16 contracts and supplementary agreements on the deal were signed.
