Meghalaya: Ex-cop kidnapped, fourth abduction this month

A former cop turned politician turned businessman was kidnapped by suspected militants in Meghalaya, making it the fourth abduction this month in the state.

militants in Meghalaya, making it the fourth abduction this
month in the state.

Akhil Hajong, a former Sub Inspector of Meghalaya
Police who had resigned to unsuccessfully contest the assembly
polls in 2003 on BJP ticket, was kidnapped by suspected Garo
militants from his residence in Dalu in West Garo Hills
district, police said.

Some six armed militants kidnapped Hajong from his
residence and is suspected to have taken him to Bangladesh.

Hajong is now a businessman dealing in bricks and
coal.

No demand has been received from the militants.

On March 24, a rubber businessman, Deben Barman, was
kidnapped by `camouflaged` men from the Assam-Meghalaya border
in East Garo Hills district.

A pharmacy owner, Kabirul Islam was abducted by Garo
National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants on March 10 from the
Resubakra area.

In another incident, a six/seven member gang of GNLA
and NDFB had kidnapped bettlenut trader Ali from the
Songsak-Mendi Road on March 9.
