Former Nepalese Prime Minister and president of Nepali Congress Girija Prasad Koirala on Sunday left for New Delhi on a five-day visit during which he is expected to meet the senior Indian leadership to discuss the intensifying Maoist insurgency.
During his talks with the Indian leaders, the issue of Maoist insurgency in the Himalayan kingdom will get top priority, according to Koirala's daughter Sujata who is accompanying him on the visit.

In this time of national crisis it is natural that the issues of Maoist insurgency will also come up during the discussions, she told reporters.

Koirala, who is visiting India at the invitation of BJP president Jana Krishnamurthy, will attend the 75th birthday celebration of former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar in New Delhi.

Chandrashekhar, has been associated with the democracy movements in Nepal, and particularly with the Nepali Congress.

Besides Krishnamurthy, the senior Nepalese leader is also expected to call upon President K R Narayanan and Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Political observers here attach considerable importance to Koirala's visit at a time when the Maoist insurgency has reached an alarming stage.

Koirala last visited India in August 2000 as the Nepalese Prime Minister.
