Dhaka, Dec 11: A retired judge heading an inquiry into a series of cinema blasts in Bangladesh that killed 17 people and injured more than 100 said he was expecting to
begin his work today.

Prime Minister Khaleda Zia has ordered Sultan Ahmed Chowdhury to conduct a thorough probe into the causes and circumstances of the weekend explosions as well as investigate who could have been responsible for them.

Judge Chowdhury, who is also a former chairman of Bangladesh Press Council, was quoted by a local TV network as saying the bombings appeared to be the work of a
well-organised and well-trained group.

He also indicated that he may have to seek an extension of the two-week time limit he was given to submit his report.

Sources said today that police investigating the explosions were questioning some 48 people who have been arrested in connection with Saturday's bomb attacks in the northern town of Mymensingh, 110 kms from the capital Dhaka.
