Dhaka, June 28: Private vehicles remained off the roads and long-distance transport services were crippled today in Bangladesh in view of the one-day strike, called by the main opposition Awami League in protest against the "tax-laden budget".
The party chief, Sheikh Hasina, has alleged that in the
taka 519.8 billion budget the government imposed an additional
tax of taka 50 billion on the poor.
While air, railway and riverine transport were unlikely
to be affected, the strike disrupted the movement of
long-distance buses and trucks and kept private vehicles off
the road, official sources said.
Educational institutions remained closed while business
and trading are likely to be affected due to the strike, they
added.
Over one hundred AL workers and supporters were subjected
to tear gas by police last evening when they tried to bring
out procession in support of today`s strike breaking police
cordon, party leaders alleged.
During the incident, many were injured seriously, they
added.
