Madras HC grants conditional bail to fireworks factory owner

The Madras High Court on Wednesday granted conditional bail to the owner of a fireworks factory at Vadakkampatti in the district, where four workers died and 16 injured in an explosion on September 24.

Madurai: The Madras High Court on Wednesday granted conditional bail to the owner of a fireworks factory at Vadakkampatti in the district, where four workers died and 16 injured in an explosion on September 24.

Justice C T Selvam directed C Sumathi, the owner of the factory, to sign in the Sekkanoorani police station daily, besides executing a personal surety for Rs 10,000.

Police had registered a case against Sumathi on a complaint by the Village Administrative Officer for mishandling explosives and causing the deaths.
The cases had been registered against her under various IPC sections, including 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and Indian Explosives Act.
Sumathi in her bail application contented that though she was the licence holder of the factory, she had not committed any offence as alleged by the prosecution. The licence had been renewed also from time to time and she had given compensation to the victims` families, she said.
