Dadri lynching: SC dismisses petition challenging UP govt's compensation to Akhlaq's family

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), which citing the hefty solatium granted to the family of Akhlaq who was lynched by a mob in Dadri accused the Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party Government of adopting a `discriminatory` compensation policy.

The petitioner in the apex court alleged that the Uttar Pradesh Government didn`t follow rules citing that the compensation to victim`s family was raised twice. The compensation was first raised to Rs. 25 lakh from 10 lakh and was finally raised to Rs. 45 lakh.

The apex court noted that the petitioner should have made Akhlaq`s family as party in the case.

Earlier, the Allahabad High Court had dismissed the petition, which was filed by a Mathura-based advocate Ritesh Chaudhary who questioned the state government`s decision to allot four plots of land in addition to Rs. 45 lakh as compensation to family members of Akhlaq who was beaten to death by a mob over rumours of beef consumption.
