Mayawati meets UP governor over law, order situation

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati Wednesday called on Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik and apprised him about the failing law and order in the state.

Lucknow: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati Wednesday called on Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik and apprised him about the failing law and order in the state.

In the meeting that lasted for over 45-minutes, the former chief minister told Naik that the state government had failed in discharging its constitutional obligations of providing security to the people.

A Raj Bhawan official told IANS that Mayawati also apprised the governor of the grim power scenario in the state and how crimes against women, weaker and the marginalised sections of the society were increasing by every day.

"The meeting was cordial and most of the talking was done by the BSP supremo and the governor gave her a patient hearing," the official said.

Reacting to the meeting, Uttar Pradesh minister and state spokesman of the ruling Samajwadi Party Rajendra Chowdhary said Mayawati`s "political conduct was neither democratic nor reasonable".

Alleging that the Dalit leader had "lost her mental balance" after suffering a humiliating defeat in the 2012 state assembly polls, he said it was now becoming her habit to petition constitutional position holders every now and then seeking imposition of the President`s rule in the state.

"She should realize that days of her autocratic rule in the state are history and the state is progressing under the able leadership of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav," he said.
