United Nations, Feb 28: United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan has warned the warring parties in trouble-torn Haiti against human rights violations, saying those indulging in any breaches of international humanitarian law will be held "individually accountable".
"The Secretary General is increasingly concerned at the alarming deterioration of the security and human rights situation in Haiti," said a statement issued late yesterday.
Annan "calls upon all Haitians to eschew violence and settle their differences through peaceful means," the statement said.
"At this critical time, he (Annan) reminds leaders, and those who aspire to leadership positions, of their responsibilities towards their fellow countrymen," it said, adding "they will be held individually accountable for any breaches of international human rights and humanitarian law."
Annan's statement came as pressure was building on President Jean-Bertrand Aristide to resign and the rebels were pressing towards the capital city of Port-au-Prince.
