Las Vegas, Nov 26: US President George W Bush has
vowed to meet "short-term security needs" in places like Iraq
with military force, but said long-term US interests are best
served by spreading global freedom.
"We'll deal with the short-term security needs by
staying on the offensive," the President said in a speech at
a hospital here to tout a sweeping overhaul of the
government's Medicare Health Care program for the elderly.
Speaking shortly after a series of explosions were
heard in Baghdad, Bush vowed that deadly insurgent attacks on
US-led forces occupying war-ravaged Iraq would not derail
plans to build a prosperous democracy there.
"This nation will stay the course to bring democracy
and freedom to Afghanistan and Iraq. By doing so, we will not
only help the long-suffering people in those countries, we
will make America more secure and the world more peaceful,"
the President said.
