New Delhi: In the wake of incessant rain and heavy downpour in Chennai leading to floods that have affected normal lives, various domestic flights have cancelled their services to and fro from the city.

Leading domestic carrier IndiGo airlines announced on its official Facebook page that few flights connecting to Chennai for Thursday have been cancelled.

“Flight operations to and fro Chennai have been affected due to heavy rains. Few flights connecting following cities to Chennai are cancelled for tomorrow - Hyderabad, Mumbai, Kochi, Kolkota, Pune, Coimbatore, Delhi & Vizag. Kindly tweet us @IndiGo6E, live chat on our website or call us at 09910383838 or +911246613838 for assistance”, the company said on its official FB page.

The company, however, assured that all passengers would be refunded 100 percent.

"IndiGo assures all passengers will receive 100 percent refund against the flight cancellations made on grounds of weather conditions, and cancellation and change fee will be waived off for affected passengers till further notice," it said.

SpiceJet also announced that all flights have been cancelled till further notice.

"We are closely monitoring the situation in Chennai. All our operations at Chennai Airport have been suspended till further instructions as the airport is water-logged and the tarmac is submerged in one and half feet of water," SpiceJet said in a release.

"The whole city is cut off from the airport and SpiceJet officials along with the Airport Authority of India are on their toes providing solace to the passengers with all the available resources," it said.

"Refunds have also been offered to cancelled flights and alternatives have been offered where ever possible," G.P. Gupta, chief administrative officer SpiceJet, said in the statement.

All operations and flights of Air India and Jet Airways have also been cancelled.

As many as 3,500 people, including 1,500 passengers, were stranded Wednesday morning at the Chennai international airport, which has been closed for operations till Thursday morning following flooding of the runway.

Airports Authority of India (AAI) said all the stranded passengers are being moved out of the airport, but did not reveal the exact number of those evacuated so far.

A NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) has been issued by AAI, which manages the airport, to all air operators with regard to suspension of flight operations till 6 am Thursday. This notice is a communication that informs pilots about potential risks to flight safety.

Around 1,500 passengers and 2,000 others working at the airport were stranded there in the morning, AAI Chairman R K Srivastava said.
