Melbourne: Serena Williams is the 'ace' leader at the Australian Open 2014, till now with 23 aces. She has moved into the round four comfortably, eliminating all her opponents in straight sets.
She is seeded number one and is already being touted as the favourite to win the first grand slam of the year. The year 2013 was one of her best tennis seasons. She is growing old but her tennis is growing by leaps and bounds. She clinched the number 1 ranking for the third time, ended the season with a 78-4 win-lose record with her 11th title of the season that includes two Majors as well. A question that now arises is that who can give a fight to Serena`s dominance this year? The only one in sight seems to be number two ranked Victoria Azarenka. But she just lost to Serena at the Brisbane International finals. Li Na, Agnieszka Radwanska haven’t had much success against Serena either. Maria Sharapova hasn’t won against Serena in eight years and holds a 2-14 record against Williams. Does Serena have any real competitor in the current lot? With the way she is progressing, Serena is definitely inching closer to equalling Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert’s records of 18 majors. With this rate, one never knows, the time will be soon when we see her surpass Steffi Graf`s 22 Majors and Maragaret Court`s 24 too!
