Seems like obesity is no longer confined to India's prosperous elite as more than one in four middle-aged Indians on low and middling incomes has been found to carry an unhealthy midriff bulge, with women most likely to carry a spare tyre.

The study, which analyzed data from 15,184 American adults over a median of 14.3 years, looked at how body mass index (or a height-to-weight ratio) and belly fat (defined by a waist-to-hip ratio) predict mortality.
