At least six FIRs have been registered so far. The charges fall under sections of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, with non-compliance considered a serious offence punishable with imprisonment of up to five years and fines.
Kamil Sedchinski, studying for his post-graduate degree in the Department of Comparative Literature at Jadavpur University, was summoned by the Foreigners’ Regional Registration Office and interrogated after which he was served a 'Leave India Notice' dated February 14, 2020. Since he received the notice on February 24, he was required to leave the country by March 9.
Delhi Police have arrested a 39-year-old Chinese man, who had been living in the country with an Indian passport for at least six years, an official said on Friday.
The accused told the police that they did petty works to earn their livelihood.
