Social media rules are all set to change, Centre to set up committee
The proposed move assumes significance against the backdrop of instances of accounts being blocked by Twitter. The aggrieved person can appeal against the decision of the grievance officer concerned before the committee within 30 days of receipt of the order. Meity has sought comments on the draft notification till June 22.

Twitter seeks more time from govt to comply with new IT rules
Twitter has said that it intends to comply with the rules but needs more time due to the pandemic situation in India. Twitter's refusal to comply with the rules demonstrated the micro-blogging site's "lack of commitment and efforts towards providing a safe experience for the people of India on its platform".

The new digital rules ask social media companies like Facebook, WhatsApp, and Twitter to identify within 36 hours the originator of a flagged message as well as to conduct additional due diligence, including the appointment of a Chief Compliance Officer, Nodal Contact Person, and resident Grievance Officer. What has caught the limelight of people is the term ‘safe harbour’ which is basically if these social media platforms don’t comply with the new rules, their indemnity will be taken away under Section 79 of the Information Technology Act.

As per the new rules, social media intermediaries have to appoint a grievance officer, who shall register complaints in 24 hours. The grievance redressal official must be resident in India, and monthly compliance reports will have to be filed by social media platforms.
