Global markets brace for impact as US President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping arrive in Seoul with rare earths, tariffs and tech supremacy all hanging by a single meeting.

The US president threatens a massive 155% tariff on Chinese goods, warns of new export controls and hints at an early 2026 visit to Beijing after talks with Xi in Seoul.

Adding fuel to the speculation, Trump commented on the matter by saying, “I understand,” in reference to Pakistan’s attack. What stood out was his lack of criticism, not a single word of disapproval or advice to Pakistan for breaching the peace. This silence, many believe, points to a deeper connection between Trump and Pakistan’s military establishment.

In an interview with Fox News, Bessent characterised the Chinese export controls as “China versus the world” and expressed confidence that US partners would extend their backing behind Washington’s efforts.

Beijing has rejected US sanctions and warns of countermeasures, while Trump vows trade pressure to resolve tensions, sparking fears of a new tariff war.

US President Donald Trump on Thursday expressed confidence about reaching a "very good" trade deal with China, even as the US imposed steep tariffs of up to 245 per cent on Chinese imports in response to Beijing's retaliatory actions.

Trump, writing on Twitter, said his goal was to reduce US reliance on China and he again urged American companies to find alternate suppliers outside China.

According to industry tracker Strategy Analytics, Samsung shipped 71.8 million units of smartphones or 21.7 per cent of the total in the January-March period, with it is market share falling 8 per cent from a year earlier.  

Negotiators from both countries have been working towards a deal to resolve the trade dispute.

The US and China have also issued a second batch of proposed duties on $16 billion of each other`s goods.

Tension between the two sides has been growing since the Trump administration proposed tariffs of $50 billion on Chinese goods and said it might extend the levies to an additional $150 billion. China responded with its own measures targeting U.S. agriculture.

The US is trying to threaten its way to forcing China to accept its unreasonable decisions, a state-run newspaper has said.
