Tapeworm infection: Know its signs and symptoms!

New Delhi: Tapeworm infection is an infection caused by a flat, long segmented worm that is found in uncooked meat, especially pork. The worm can also cause a wide array of symptoms, apart from severe abdominal pain, that need medical attention.

Here are some common symptoms of tapeworm infections:

Weight loss

If you feel that there is a drastic change in your weight along with severe stomach pain, then you might be suffering from tapeworm infection. As the worm feeds on the food that you eat, there are high chances that you will experience weight loss.

Blood in stools

The worm attaches itself to the walls of the intestines and becomes immobile thereby causing tiny ulcerations. This causes bloody stools in people suffering from the infection.

Diarrhoea

Severe diarrhoea along with unexplained and sharp abdominal pain could be the symptoms of tapeworm infection. The body parts of tapeworm and eggs will show up in your stool, if you have the infection.

Nausea and vomiting

Nausea and vomiting are the initial signs of indigestion and stomach discomfort. If you experience this symptom after having a non-vegetarian meal, then consult a doctor as you might be suffering from tapeworm infection.

These signs and symptoms will depend on the type of tapeworm, how severe the infection is, and which part of the body is affected.
