New Delhi: A 30-year-old woman, named Ivanka Danisova from Slovakia, was bullied throughout her childhood because she was born with half face.

This is because she suffers from a congenital birth defect called 'Goldenhar syndrome' that caused underdeveloped cranial bones on the right side of her face. Doctors have shown little hope for her to survive.

Now, the junior lawyer has undergone life-changing corrective surgery in the United States, defeating medical expectations and her bullies.

According to a report in Daily Mail, Ivanka has become the first European to undergo life-changing treatment for the condition in the US.

Reportedly, Professor Russell Reid, a world-renowned specialist based in Chicago, has carried out two procedures. It lasted for 20 hours and the other 11 doctors to reconstruct the woman's face.

The 30-year-old has spent most of her life covering up the defect with her long hair and even battling cruel comments from strangers.

She also suffers from cardiac arrhythmia and was diagnosed with leukaemia three years ago.

Danisova will be travelling back to the US in September for one final operation to help her lead a normal life.

Goldenhar syndrome affects one out of 25,000 babies at birth and can affect one side of the face or on the both. The abnormalities appear mostly in the areas of ears, eyes and spine in varying degrees.

The condition also affects some internal organs leading to severe heart, kidney, lungs and oncological diseases.
