Elated over the BJP's performance, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was overjoyed that the BJP "has received unprecedented support from all sections of society. Huge support from the youth is gladdening."

"Every moment of our time, everything we do is for welfare & wellbeing of the people of India. We believe in the power of 125 crore Indians," tweeted the PM.

He also congratulated BJP chief "Amit Shah, party office bearers and state units for their exemplary work in taking the party to new heights". 

Commenting on Punjab debacle, the PM thanked people of the state for giving Shiromani Akali Dal and BJP "the opportunity to serve for 10 years and for the support we got in these polls".

Earlier, BJP chief Amit Shah said his party is set to form governments in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur. He added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emerged as the tallest leader in the country and even BJP's political rivals have to admit it.

"The historic mandate given to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in all five states will give a new direction to Indian polity," Shah said. 

"It is a mandate for continuation of 2014's developmental agenda," Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu said after the election results.

Punjab Cabinet Minister Bikram Singh Majithia is ahead in Majitha seat by a margin of 1,126 votes over his nearest Congress rival.

In Hargobindpur seat, Balwinder Singh Laddi of Congress has taken the lead, while AAP's Kulwant Singh is ahead in Mehal Kalan seat.

The three-time Chief Minister, who had established an insurmountable lead over Sharmila of the PRJA party, won comfortably with over 15,000 votes. Leitanthem Basanta Singh of BJP came second in the votes.

Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh of the Congress party wins in Thoubal constituency, defeating rights activist Irom Sharmila, who got only 90 votes.

Naga People's Front (NPF) and National People's Party (NPP) ahead in two seats each and an independent candidate in one seat, trends from 17 out of 60-member Assembly seats show.

The Congress is leading in 13 of 24 constituencies for which trends were available, followed by the BJP in eight. Smaller parties led in three constituencies.
