Government appoints Governors for Jharkhand, three Northeast states

The BJP-led NDA government on Tuesday appointed Governors for Jharkhand, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya.

Delhi: The BJP-led NDA government on Tuesday appointed Governors for Jharkhand, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya.

BJP national executive member Tathagata Roy was appointed Tripura Governor and Darupadi Murmu was appointed Governor of Jharkhand in place
of Syed Ahmed who has been transferred to Manipur.

Roy, a senior BJP leader from West Bengal had unsuccessfully contested from Kolkata Dakshin Lok Sabha constituency in 2014.

Murmu, a BJP leader from Odisha, has been an active member of the party and contested many elections. She was an MLA from Rairangpur Assembly constituency in the year 2000.

Ahmed was appointed Jharkhand Governor in September 2011. His term ends in September next year.

On the other hand, Nirbhay Sharma, serving as Governor of Arunachal Pradesh since May 2013, was transferred and appointed as Governor of Mizoram for the remainder of his term which ends in 2018.

A Rashtrapati Bhavan communique while announcing the appointments said V Shanmuganthan, a BJP leader and a former Sangh functionary, has been made the Governor of Meghalaya and former Chief Secretary of Assam JP Rakkhowa the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh, as per PTI.

Rakkhowa is a 1968-batch IAS officer and has been actively involved in issues related to Northeast after his retirement.
