‘Committed to transfer powers to panchayats’

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday said his government is committed to transfer powers to panchayats, and these institutions should be responsible for area specific development.

to transfer powers to panchayats, and these institutions
should be responsible for area specific development.

"We are moving forward in this connection", the chief
minister said, asserting that powerful and delivering
panchayat system in the state is his government`s endeavour.

He was addressing panches and sarpanches after
inaugurating four-day orientation camp in this border
constituency of north Kashmir.

Omar said a three-tier panchayat system should be the
basic democratic institution responsible for area specific and
holistic development in the state.

"A three-tier panchayat system comprising of halqa
panchayats, block councils and district councils will be basic
democratic institutions responsible for the area specific and
holistic development of all areas in the state," he said.
