Temple entry proclamation will inspire generations: Kerala CM

Kerala Chief Minister on Thursday said that the memory of temple entry proclamation by the Travancore King in 1936, permitting entry for lower caste people would inspire generations.

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Chief Minister
VS Achuthanandan on Thursday said that the memory of temple entry
proclamation by the Travancore King in 1936, permitting entry
for lower caste people would inspire generations in the fight
against casteism and social injustice.

Inaugurating the temple entry proclamation memorial
function here, he said that it was not really the proclamation
that should be remembered, but the struggles by all sections
of people to achieve the right.

He said progressive upper caste leaders and social
reformers led by Sree Narayana Guru, Ayyankali and Swami had
fought for social justice during the period.

The struggles by all sections of people forced the King,
Sree Chithira Tirunal Balarama Varma to issue the proclamation
on Nov 12, 1936 and earn a place in history.

He also introduced reservation for Scheduled Castes and
Scheduled Tribes in royal administration services in
Travancore, Achuthanandan said.

The reservation system was extended to the entire state
when the first Communist government came to power in 1957,
he added.
