Dey murder: Cops seek 45-day extension in filing

Dey (56), working with English tabloid Mid Day, was shot dead by four motorcycle-borne assailants in suburban Powai on June 11.

Mumbai: The Crime Branch probing the murder
of city-based journalist Jyotirmoy Dey on Wednesday sought extension
of 45 days for filing the charge sheet from the special MCOCA court.

Dey (56), working with English tabloid Mid Day, was shot
dead by four motorcycle-borne assailants in suburban Powai on
June 11.

Special public prosecutor Dileep Shah submitted a report,
detailing the reason(s) for extension of filing the charge
sheet, to the court which is likely to give order on the
extension tomorrow.

Shah argued in the court that the case was of serious and
sensitive nature and crime branch will join all the dots
before filing the charge sheet.

He told the court that the investigating officer had
received (additional) information and needs time to probe
further.

Arguing that the investigators need to go to the root of
the matter, the special public prosecutor said the sleuths
have found details regarding SIM cards and conversation which
need to be verified.

Shah said the delay in filing the charge sheet will
neither have any adverse impact on the course of investigation
nor will cause any prejudice towards the accused.

Whatever is in the report is the judgement of the
investigating officer and he needs to be given a chance to
probe into all the aspects involved, Shah said.

Referring to some media reports indicating that a
journalist is also responsible and is under interrogation in
connection with the murder case, the counsel said such reports
are interfering in the investigation.

He, however, told the court that the investigating
officer was exploring all the angles pertaining to the murder.

Ten accused, including Rohee Thangappan Joseph alias
Satish Kalya and his associates, Abhijeet Shinde, Arun Dake,
Sachin Gaikwad, Anil Waghmode, Nilesh Shendge, Mangesh
Agawane, Vinod Asrani, Paulson Joseph and Deepak Sisodia --
all members of Chhota Rajan gang -- were so far arrested in
connection with the murder.
