Mumbai: The family of Gopal Jagdish Walmiki, who was arrested for allegedly making obscene gestures in front of a US national, says that the youth told them that he was urinating and not doing anything else.

Walmiki, a resident of Arthur Bunder Road in Colaba, got married a month ago, and has been interning with a share-broker after completing his graduation. His father works with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) as a sweeper, reports DNA.

According to Laxmi, Walmiki's sister: “Our neighbours informed us that Gopal's photograph was being shown on news channels and social media. We were shocked to come across the news. My brother told us that he was urinating when the woman spotted him. He goes by the same path to buy grocery daily. There has never been such a complaint in the past."

Walmiki was arrested last morning and got released on bail later in the evening, a day after his picture at Colaba in south Mumbai got viral on social media.

The alleged incident had occurred on Monday when the woman was taking a morning walk in the area and the youth allegedly masturbated at her.

She clicked a photo of the youth and posted it online along with tweets about the incident, which went viral on social networking sites.

The victim had also mentioned about two men, who where passing-by and came to her help when she raised an alarm.

Police had on Tuesday recorded the woman's statement and registered an FIR.

The accused has been booked under Section 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult modesty of a woman) of the IPC. His family members accompanied him to the Esplanade Court at Azad Maidan later and secured his bail for Rs 5,000 as surety.
