New Delhi, Mar 16: Soon victims of violence in live-in relationships, other than married couples, could also approach government for redress if the demand of activists
for inclusion of the same in the Domestic Violence Bill was accepted.

Part of a document released yesterday at the end of a
two-day conference organised jointly by International
Commission of Jurists, Geneva, and Indian Social Institute
here, recommended "that the interpersonal relationship shall
include a relationship between two persons who live, had lived
or been residing at any point in family or shared household."

The recommendation further said the interpersonal
relationship should also include two persons who are related
by consanguinity, through employment, marriage or through a
relationship of marriage, adoption or family members living
together as joint family.

"The draft bill was considered seriously flawed in most
of its aspects as it falls short of India's obligation under
international human rights law and fails to provide effective
remedies to the victims of domestic violence," the document
said.

Pointing out that the draft bill "is very limited in
scope and leaves out certain categories of women," it
recommended that the bill must cover the children who are
victims of domestic violence, all women whether they are civil
or religiously married to the abuser, whether they live, have
lived or have never lived with the abuser."
