New Delhi, Aug 22: BJP President M Venkaiah Naidu today lashed out at the Congress for criticism of the proposed 'gaurav yatra' by BJP in Gujarat from September 3 saying
this showed that the party was "nervous" of facing early assembly elections in the state.

"Why is Congress becoming so nervous. Congress cannot run
away from the people for long," he told reporters here.

Expressing surprise over Congress president Sonia Gandhi objecting to the gaurav yatra, he said "debate, discussion and campaign is the essence of democracy" and asked "whether
Congress alone had the right to campaign."

He asked what was wrong if a political party carries out
a campaign and if the chief minister wants to go around
meeting people.

Naidu ducked repeated questions on the party's stand over
the observation of the Election Commission suggesting
postponement of elections in Gujarat and the governor speaking
to the contrary.

"I do not want to make any comments on the Election Commission or the governor as they are constitutional institutions," he said.

Naidu said a 12-member committee for campaign and
election management for Gujarat headed by former chief
minister Keshubhai Patel has been formed and its first meeting
will be held in Gandhinagar on Monday.

The meeting will be attended by party general secretary
Arun Jaitley who is in charge of the state as also Ramdas
Agarwal.
