New Delhi, Nov 01: Congress today ridiculed BJP's
attempt to appropriate the legacy of former Home Minister
Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel saying it was the late leader who as
Home Minister had pronounced RSS a communal outfit and got it
banned after the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi.

"In Gujarat, caretaker Chief Minister Narendra Modi is
appropriating the legacy of Sardar Patel. There can't be a
bigger joke than this", party spokesman Anand Sharma told
reporters.

He said it was unfortunate that a party and leaders who
were spreading hatred and communalism were now attempting to
inherit the legacy of India's first home minister who played a
significant role in the unification of this country after
independence.

Patel was a great freedom fighter and throughout his life
fought for social amity and unity of the country, he said
adding that unlike BJP and RSS who never participated in the
freedom struggle but were claiming legacy of the leader.

He said, therefore, it was for the RSS, Modi and BJP
leaders to read the orders of the Home Minister before
claiming his legacy.
