Fog forces suspension of air, rail traffic

New Delhi, Jan 18: Dense fog continued to play havoc in the national capital forcing suspension of air traffic for more than nine hours besides cancellation of four trains and rescheduling of several others.

Day temperature also dropped to 15.6 degrees celsius
against yesterday's 16.3 degrees celsius, five degrees below
normal, although the night temperature stabilised a bit at
normal 7.1 degrees celsius.

As fog continued to paralyse normal life especially in
the evenings and early mornings, meteorological department
today warned the situation would continue for some more days.

Operation of flights at the Indira Gandhi international
airport here were suspended from 2300 hours yesterday after
the runway visibility range dipped drastically to 75 metres,
airport sources said.

The flight service resumed at 0821 hours today with
improvement of the situation, they said adding at least four
international flights were diverted to Mumbai in the meantime.

Train services were also affected with 2304 Poorva
Express, 2497 Shan-e-Panjab and 4722 and 4731 Inter-City
Express being cancelled. At least 16 other trains were
rescheduled due to low visibility, northern railway sources
said.

Fog also affected movement of traffic on the capital's
roads since early last evening till late in the morning today.

Vehicles with blinkers on were found to be cruising
slowly amid very low visibility.
