New Delhi, Sept 03: Rains drenched many parts of north
India today plummeting mercury by several notches providing
respite to the people from hot and humid weather.
Widespread rains created traffic snarls up at several
places as vehicles moved at snail's pace due to water-logging.
Hissar and Ambala in Haryana received 34 and 12.4 mm of
rains respectively as the temperature in the two districts
dipped by two to four degrees celsius.
Chandigarh, which received 11.4 mm of rain, had the
maximum day temperature of 31 degrees celsius.
In Ludhiana in Punjab, the mercury stayed at pleasant 29
degrees celsius as the district received 25.1 mm of rain.
Delhi received 9.6 mm of rain as traffic was thrown out of
gear at several key intersections with lights konking off
following the downpour.
Scooterists were stranded and people had to wade through
knee deep water to reach their destinations, particularly in
low-lying areas.
In Himachal Pradesh, Shimla, where the temperature dipped
to 22.5 degrees celsius, Bhuntar, Sundernagar, Nahan, Una and
Solan received sharp showers.
In Rajashtan, heavy downpour affected normal life in
Jodhpur while Jalore, Banswara, Bhinmal, Mount Abu, Udaipur,
Bikaner, Jaiselmer and Barmer had intermittent showers.
An upper air cyclonic circulation is active over
north-west Rajasthan and adjoining Punjab, the met office
said, adding moderate to heavy rains are likely at many places
in the region in the next 48 hours.
