Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi
today dismissed as "false and baseless" allegations by AGP of
his involvement in the multi-crore rupees NC Hills district
council scam, saying the intention was to malign him.

"The allegation made by Prafulla Kumar Mahanta,
Chandra Mohan Patowary (AGP leaders) and others about my
involvement in the alleged Rs 1000-crore scam is false and
baseless. It is an attempt to malign me in view of the
upcoming assembly elections," Gogoi told reporters here.

"It is nothing but a calculated move to cover up their
misdeeds, corruption, inefficiency and bad governance. There
was corruption all along in NC Hills and it reached its peak
when BJP and ASDC combine was ruling the Council there."

He alleged that the AGP`s tenure was marred by secret
killings and non-payment of salary to government employees.
They also did not hold panchayat polls, he said.

"All development activities had come to a halt then.
They now want to divert the attention of the people from the
all-round development activities and good governance by the
Congress," he said.

According to Gogoi, it was for his government that
there was development on all fronts including education,
health and road-transport and better law and order situation.
