Nagaland govt urges EC to reschedule by-poll date

Nagaland government has requested the Election Commission to change the polling date for Aonglenden Assembly by-poll from May 8 since Sunday would be inconvenient for both officials.

Kohima: Nagaland government has requested
the Election Commission to change the polling date for
Aonglenden Assembly by-poll from May 8 since Sunday would be
inconvenient for both officials and the voters as almost all
of them will be Christian in the constituency.

The EC could either postpone or prepone the by-poll by
a day so that the exercise did not fall on Sunday when
Christians attend Sunday service in churches, Chief Secretary
Lalthara said in a letter to the EC yesterday.

The letter was sent after consultation with the Chief
Minister, the Home Minister and the CEO of Nagaland, which is
predominantly a Christian state.

Earlier on Thursday, Nagaland state Congress had also
written to the EC requesting him to reschedule the polling date.

By-election to Aonglenden was necessitated following
the demise of the Congress MLA Nungshijungba Longkumer last
year.
