The Environment Ministry has invited applications from agencies for implementing climate change mitigation and adaptation projects in the country utilising Green Climate Fund.

New Delhi: The Environment Ministry has invited applications from agencies for implementing climate change mitigation and adaptation projects in the country utilising Green Climate Fund.

India as an eligible country has access to Green Climate Fund (GCF) -- set up under the framework of the UNFCCC in 2010 -- and can seek financial support to undertake adaptation and mitigation activities at national and regional level.

Eligible institutions are required to submit their applications by February 12, the ministry said on its website.

The applications are invited for consideration and selection as 'National Implementing Entity (NIE) of GCF and eventual accreditation by the GCF Board.

The GCF Board supervises the operation of green climate fund and approves projects for mitigation and adaptation activities in developing countries.

The applicants must meet the fiduciary and management standards and environmental and social safeguard standards as given in the operational policies and guidelines by the GCF Board for accessing resources from climate fund.

India is one of the 24 GCF Board members. According to many studies, funds currently available are small compared to the magnitude of the needs assessed.
