Musharraf seeks injunction against arrest warrant

Islamabad: Beleaguered former dictator Pervez Musharraf on Tuesday approached Pakistan`s Supreme Court for an injunction against the arrest warrant issued by a special court that has directed him to appear on February 7.

The move came a day after the bailable arrest warrant was served on 70-year-old Musharraf at the military hospital in Rawalpindi where he is admitted.

"We have filed an appeal in the Supreme Court seeking an injunction. We have already given the Rs 25 lakh bond details to the police," Mohammad Ali Saif, a key member of Musharraf?s legal team, told a news agency.
Asked about media reports that Musharraf had decided to appear in the court on February 7, Saif said: "Nothing has been decided as yet. There are two days left, so one cannot say he will appear in court or will not appear in court."

He clarified the legal team had sought an injunction but not challenged the court`s order.

Musharraf has skipped all hearings of the special court formed by the government in December last year to try him on charges of high treason for imposing emergency in 2007.
On January 31, the court issued a bailable arrest warrant for Musharraf and ordered his production on February 7. The Islamabad Police last night served the warrant at the Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology, where he was admitted on January 2 after developing heart problems.

However, Musharraf wrote a note and handed it over to police. "He wrote, `I do not recognise the authority of this court. However, I am complying for the greater good of the rule of law," said Raza Bokhari, a spokesman for the former army chief.

Musharraf`s lawyers gave police details about the surety bonds of Rs 25 lakh. Police served the warrant only after waiting for two-and-half hours at the hospital.

The Express Tribune today reported that over Rs 10 crore has been spent on Musharraf`s security in nine months. Over 400 police and paramilitary personnel are guarding him.
