Islamabad, Apr 29: Pakistan`s ruling alliance has agreed to review controversial changes to the Constitution made by President Pervez Musharraf, political leaders said today.
Government and opposition parties agreed during a second
round of crisis talks late yesterday to set up a joint
11-member committee to examine the Legal Framework Order (LFO)
under which General Musharraf rewrote the constitution in
August.

"The committee will discuss the legal framework order and
other political issues," information minister Sheikh Rashid
told a news agency.

The opposition Pakistan People`s Party (PPP) of former
Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto said the government may be
preparing to reconsider constitutional changes.

"The government has not actually said it is reviewing the
LFO, but its willingness to form this committee would imply
that," PPP Senator Farhatullah Babar told a news agency.

Through the LFO Musharraf enforced more than 20 change to
the original 1973 constitution, including the revival of
presidential powers to sack the Parlaiment and the
formalisation of a military role in government.

Islamist and secular opposition parties, charging that
the changes give the military superiority over the civilian
Parliament, insist the changes must be submitted to the lower
house for debate and approval.

Under the Constitution any amendment requires the support
of two-thirds of the house.
