Madurai: MDMK leader Vaiko has charged that the Centre was trying to "economically destroy" Tamil Nadu and urged all political parties in the state to unite and fight against it.

Addressing a meeting organised to felicitate him for fighting for the cause of increasing water level in Mullaiperiyar dam to 142 ft height here late last night, he said he would fight for the cause of the state.

He claimed that it was due to his eight year long fight, Tamil Nadu was able to get its right to increase the dam level to 142 ft. It was the duty of Tamil Nadu to maintain the dam in good condition, he said.

He said the dam level should be increased to 152ft.

He alleged that check dams were being constructed in Karnataka to prevent flow of water to Cauvery river. The Methane gas project would harm the farm sector in delta area.

Vaiko was presented a sword weighing 142 sovereigns to honour him for his role in increasing the Mullaiperiyar dam level to 142ft. He was also presented a panchaloha statue of Pennyquik who built the Mullaiperiyar dam.

On the bull taming sport of "Jallikattu" he said in Tamil Nadu bulls were worshipped during "Mattupongal" day and no harm would be caused to bulls during the sport.
