Mayawati has lost her base: Congress

Congress on Tuesday ridiculed Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Maywati`s move seeking reservation for the poor belonging to all castes.

New Delhi: Congress on Tuesday ridiculed Uttar
Pradesh Chief Minister Maywati`s move seeking reservation for
the poor belonging to all castes saying she has "lost her
base" and hence "seeking reservation for one and all".
"Election dates are behind her move. She (Mayawati) knows
she has lost her base and hence doing this and that and
seeking reservation for everybody," party spokesperson Renuka
Choudhary told reporters here.

Her reaction came a day after Mayawati in an apparent bid
to woo upper caste voters ahead of the next year`s Uttar
Pradesh polls, requested Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to
introduce reservation for poor people from the community.

Pressing for reservation, she said it was necessary to
help those living below poverty line, irrespective of their
caste and class.
Mayawati had written a similar letter to the PM on
September 17 asking for constitutional amendment to provide
reservation for Muslims in government jobs and educational
institutions.

Replying to a volley of questions on the protests in
Andhra Pradesh over the Telangana issue, the Congress
spokesperson urged for patience and caution saying that a
solution can be arrived through peaceful method.

A party leader speaking on the condition of anonymity,
said, "we cannot do it under duress" underlining the
complications involved in the issue.
