Germany, a pillar to curb Iran N-programme: Israel

Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak praised Germany for playing a key role in international efforts to halt Iran`s nuclear programme.

Jerusalem: Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak on Sunday praised Germany for playing a key role in international efforts to halt Iran`s controversial nuclear programme.

"We, in Israel, all know that Germany is a pillar in the international community, standing against Iran`s continued movement towards military-nuclear capability -- playing a part in both the sanctions and diplomacy, and whatever might be needed to block them," Xinhua quoted Barak as saying.

The minister was speaking at the beginning of a meeting with visiting German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle in Jerusalem.

Westerwelle, on his second visit to Israel this year, recently said that the progression of Iran`s presumed military nuclear programme constitutes a reason for concern, mainly for the Jewish state.

"The situation is very serious. I can understand the people in Israel who, in light of their country`s vulnerability, are worried about their existence," Westerwelle told German media on Thursday.

Barak told Westerwelle that Israel was grateful for its "very good relationship" with Germany, as evident in the signing of an agreement earlier this year to purchase a sixth submarine for the Israel Navy, noting that Berlin has also played a leading role in promoting peace and normalisation between Israel and the Palestinians, according to a statement.

Westerwelle`s visit comes as other countries are initiating tougher measures aimed at convincing Iran to abandon its nuclear ambitions.
