Police shot and wounded a man they said "fired wildly" at them with a semi-automatic assault rifle inside a crowded bus and train station after he fled from a traffic stop.

Nobody else was hurt in the shooting on Monday, although bullet holes were found in an Amtrak train and in one of the three Greyhound buses in the station. A bullet was found inside a dinner roll inside the train's unoccupied dining car, police said.

There were an estimated 250 passengers aboard the train and 100 were aboard the three buses at the time, in addition to an unknown number of people in the terminal, police spokesman Dick Cottam said.

"We were lucky he didn't try to get on board and take hostages," Cottam said.

The suspect, Jason Graham, 20, of Spokane, was under police guard at a hospital on Monday after surgery for a bullet wound to his leg, Cottam said.
