Maharashtra Civic Poll Results 2017: As it happened on Thursday

Mumbai: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday showcased an impressive performance by winning 82 Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and majorly gaining in elections held for other municipal bodies.

The Shiv Sena finished on top of a hung BMC but the BJP said it could take control of India's richest civic body with the backing of independents. Sena finished with just 84 of the 227 seats.

BJP emerged as the big winner by conquering eight municipal corporations Pimpri-Chinchwad, Akola, Amravati, Solapur, Pune, Nashik, Nagpur and Ulhasnagar.

As it put up a sterling performance in civic polls across Maharashtra including the cash-rich BMC, Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked the people of Maharashtra for reposing their faith in the "politics of development" and "good governance".

Elated over BJP's performance in Maharashtra civic polls, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said BJP's victory resulted from a vote for transparency and demonetisation.

Apart from Mumbai, the municipal corporations which went to the polls were Thane, Ulhasnagar, Nashik, Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Solapur, Akola, Amravati, and Nagpur.

2,990 Panchayat Samiti seats: BJP got the lion's share, winning 803, while NCP got 630, Congress 555 and Sena 538. MNS pocketed just two and others 281 seats. Results of the 181 seats still awaited.

The Shiv Sena, which has ruled the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) for the last 25 years, retained its hold on the civic body by winning 67 seats.

Accordingly, of the total 131 seats, Sena won 67 and secured a majority, while its estranged ally BJP got 23 seats. NCP stood second with 34 seats.

Uddhav Thackeray addresses a press conference says, Shiv Sena increased its vote share in Maharashtra Civic Polls.

When asked if his party would align with the BJP for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, the Sena chief said, neither Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has called him nor he has spoken with the Maharashtra CM on the tie-up issue.

He exudes confidence that Shiv Sena will retain the coveted Mayor's post.

"What is the hurry? Wait for some time. We have not yet decided if an alliance is to be made or not. We will do so soon," Thackeray says, adding that "But I can assure that not only the Mayor, even the future Chief Minister will be from the Sena."

BJP leader Vinod Tawde says his party has emerged as the overall leader in elections to 10 municipal corporations and 25 zilla parishads. "The BJP is the number one party in Maharashtra," Tawde, who is also the state's Education Minister, tells reporters outside the party office amid bursting of firecrackers by BJP workers, who were celebrating the party almost doubling its 2012 poll tally in BMC. "This result is a befitting reply to Sena spokesperson Sanjay Raut, who had said the BJP did not have the 'aukat' (ability) to win even 40 seats in the BMC," Tawde says.

As counting trends showed the Shiv Sena surging far ahead in Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, the BJP says it will "introspect" reasons for the party's performance which was "not as per expectations". "We will introspect and find out reasons for our performance in Mumbai, which was not as per expectations," Maharashtra BJP chief spokesperson Madhav Bhandari says. "We have worked hard to reach the number one position in Maharashtra and have taken the party beyond Mumbai and Thane," he adds.

With the trends indicating early lead for Shiv Sena in the BMC polls, MP Anil Desai exudes confidence that there will be no need for them to forge an alliance with BJP in the Mumbai civic body. "The response of the people has been very good. There are several places where the Sena is leading. This is all due to the faith of people in the leadership of (late Sena supremo) Balasaheb (Thackeray) and Uddhav ji," Desai tells reporters at the Sena Bhavan.
