Sydney: Serena Williams’ hope to win the Australian Open was dashed on Sunday, when the Serbian tennis sensation Ana Ivanovic defeated the American 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the fourth round. Top seeded Serena was certainly the best bet to win the first slam of year, and the kind form she was in, made her a firm favourite.
But after the shocking exit of Serena, who was bidding for her sixth Australian Open and 18th Grand Slam title, the Major has suddenly open the doors for many title contenders in women`s singles. Second seeded Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, who is defending her title, has become the top contender now. In the absence of Serena, Maria Sharapova and Li Na too have a good chance to lift the title, as these two have the game and experience to back themselves till the very end of the tournament. However, 14th seeded Ana Ivanovic, who caused the first major upset of the slam by beating Serena, the former world number one also claimed her bid for the title race. The only Grand Slam Ivanovic has won to date is 2008 French Open. After getting the better of Serena, high on confidence Ivanovic would also be eager to add another Major slam to her kitty for sure. So, the biggest upset in women’s tennis at the Rod Laver Arena this year, has opened the doors for many contenders, to win the Grand Slam in the women’s category and start their season on a high.
