United States imposes sanctions on Russia over poisoning of Alexei Navalny
The officials reiterated Biden`s call for Russia to release Navalny from prison. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday before the U.S. announcement that Moscow would respond in kind to any new U.S. sanctions over Navalny. Navalny was arrested and later sentenced to more than 2-1/2 years in jail for parole violations he said were trumped up.

A Moscow court rejected Navalny`s appeal on Saturday, while shortening his original jail term by six weeks. The original term was 3-1/2 years. More than 4,500 held in Russia at protests against jailing of Navalny
Riot police broke up protests across Russia on Sunday in support of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny detaining more than 4,500 people. In a massive show of force, police imposed a sweeping security lockdown in the heart of Moscow, sealing off streets to pedestrians near the Kremlin. A column of protesters marched towards the prison in northern Moscow where Navalny is being held, chanting "Let him go!".

Alexei Navalny team says Novichok was found on water bottle in hotel room
A video posted on Navalny`s Instagram account showed members of his team searching the room he had just left in the Xander Hotel in Tomsk on Aug. 20, an hour after they learned he had fallen sick in suspicious circumstances. Navalny fell violently ill on a domestic flight in Russia last month and was subsequently airlifted to Berlin for treatment. Laboratories in Germany, France and Sweden have established he was poisoned by a Novichok nerve agent, though Russia denies this and says it has seen no evidence.

The apparent assassination attempt has brought tensions between Russia and Europe to new heights and fuelled calls for sanctions against Moscow - including scrapping the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, a Kremlin flagship project to bring more Russian gas directly to Germany under the Baltic Sea. Russia`s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused the West of using the incident as a pretext to impose additional sanctions on Russia, the Interfax news agency reported. German army doctors at Berlin`s Charite hospital, to which Navalny was evacuated after falling unconscious during a flight over Siberia last month, were the first to say he had been poisoned with Novichok. Navalny awoke from a coma last week.

Russia clashes with Germany, other West allies over Alexei Navalny poisoning
The confrontation came at the monthly UN Security Council meeting on chemical weapons in Syria. The United States, Belgium, Britain, Estonia and France expressing concern at Germany's determination that 44-year-old Navalny was the victim of a chemical weapons attack using a military-grade nerve agent from the Novichok group. Britain's acting UN ambassador, Jonathan Allen, said a similar nerve agent was used "with lethal effect" in southern England in 2018 on former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter.

Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny has made further progress in his recovery after what Germany said was poisoning with a Soviet-style Novichok nerve agent, Der Spiegel magazine reported. The Kremlin critic is being treated in Berlin`s Charite hospital after falling ill on a Russian domestic flight last month. Germany says Navalny was the victim of an attempt to kill him and has demanded an explanation from Russia.

Doctors at the Siberian hospital that first treated Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny said that on Monday they had saved his life. The doctors, however, said that they had not found traces of poison in his system. Navalny, a long-time opponent of President Vladimir Putin, fell gravely ill on Thursday after what his allies believe was a poisoning and was airlifted to Germany for treatment on Saturday.
