Which bacteria could be behind elephant deaths in Zimbabwe and Botswana?
Zimbabwe`s parks agency said a bacterial disease known as haemorrhagic septicaemia could be behind the deaths of 34 elephants. This comes a week after Botswana blamed toxins produced by another type of bacterium for killing more than 300 elephants. Officials are conducting more tests on samples from Zimbabwe`s dead elephants to try to get conclusive results.

Botswana says toxins in water killed over 300 hundred elephants
Cyanobacteria are microscopic organisms common in water and sometimes found in soil. Not all produce toxins but scientists say toxic ones are occurring more frequently as climate change drives up global temperatures. Cyril Taolo, deputy director of the Department of Wildlife and National Parks, told a news conference the number of elephant carcasses found since deaths were first reported around early May had risen to 330, from 281 in July.
