Govt defends new IT rules:They stop fake news, prevent misuse of press freedom
The government said there have been "past incidents of disinformation on digital media leading to disturbance of public order" The Centre has claimed that the regulation of media content in the electronic form is well within the scope of the IT Act The new rules, the govt claims, do not provide any additional restrictions apart from what is already prohibited by existing statutes.

New guidelines to regulate content on social media, OTT platforms unveiled
The government on Thursday unveiled new policies for social media and over the top (OTT) platforms. In a press conference, IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said that the new guidelines will keep an eye on the web content/OTT content and empower social media users.

The Centre has decided that digital media companies which have more than 26% FDI will have to reduce it to 26%. The Centre has set a deadline till October next year for the compliance. The new rules will help the government to monitor foreign companies.
