Serena Williams pulls out of French Open with achilles injury

Serena Williams` search for a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title will extend into another year after an achilles tendon injury forced her to withdraw from the French Open. The American, who turned 39 this week, had been due to play Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova in the second round later but after a warm-up decided the injury was too severe. Serena Williams, a three-times former champion at Roland Garros, said she may not play again this year.

Serena Williams was forced to dig deep to secure a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over unseeded Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova in the US Open last-8 clash. Williams has been stuck on 23 Grand Slam singles titles, one shy of Margaret Court`s record, since winning the 2017 Australian Open. The American will next face either Belgian 16th seed Elise Mertens or former world number one Victoria Azarenka of Belarus in the semi-final tie.
