PORUR (Chennai): A couple hailing from Porur in Chennai allegedly committed suicide as their children were not ready to take care of them.

62-year-old Manoharan and 56-year-old Jeeva were government employees who took retirement under the Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS). The couple has a 32-year-old son and a 29-year-old daughter.

The incident was brought to look light after neighbours noticed smoke emanating from Manoharan's home on Wednesday night. They informed fire service officials who had to break the door to enter the complex.

While Manoharan's completely charred body was found on the bed, Jeeva's body was found in the living room.

Police was called in and the bodies were taken for post-mortem.

As per the initial probe, Manoharan and Jeeva were depressed as their children did not take care of them. Under depression, Manoharan allegedly gave poison to his wife and then went to his bed, poured fuel over his body and ignited it.

A suicide note was recovered from their home on which they had mentioned the of their relatives. "Pls use the below amount for our final rights. P don’t bury us but burn our bodies”, the note stated.

Two cheques for Rs 2 lakh each were found from the house signed in the name of their son as money to conduct the final rights.
