Assembly Elections 2017: Congress veteran ND Tiwari's son Rohit Shekhar joins BJP

New Delhi: Son of senior Congress leader from Uttarakhand Narayan Dutt Tiwari, Rohit Shekhar joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday.

Earlier today, there were reports that

Tiwari, who had accompanied his son and wife Ujjwala to BJP president Amit Shah's New Delhi residence, has also joined the party.

Tiwari, 91, was Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister for three terms and was the third Chief Minister of Uttarakhand from 2002 to 2007. He also served as a minister at the Centre several times having held charge of key portfolios like Finance and External Affairs.

Tiwari was also the Governor of Andhra Pradesh from 2007 to 2009. However, he had to quit the post after he got embroiled in a sex tape controversy.

Expressing disappointment over the report of ND Tiwari joinin BJP, his nephew alleged that the veteran leader has been mislead by somebody with 'vested interests'.

"We are shocked, I think he has been misled into joining BJP by some who have vested interests," Manish Tiwari, nephew of ND Tiwari told ANI.

"I am sure he (ND Tiwari) doesn't even know he has joined the BJP. Ask him alone in a room and you will get the answer," he added further.

Rohit Shekhar is the biological son of ND Tiwari and Ujjwala Sharma, who Tiwari married in 2014.

The veteran Congress politician Tiwari had accepted Rohit, who took him to court, as his son, last year after his marriage to Ujjawala.

Tiwari, who has been the governor of Andhra Pradesh and Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, fought his son all the way to the Supreme Court before marrying Ujjwala.

Shekhar went to court against Tiwari in 2008, claiming he was born out of an affair between the Congress leader and his mother.

The 91-year-old leader was thrice the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh (1976-77, 1984-85, 1988-89) and once the chief minister of Uttarakhand (2002-2007).In 1986-1987, he served in former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi`s cabinet as Minister for External Affairs.
