New Delhi: Depression is a common mental disorder that causes persistent feelings of sadness and loss of interest.

This condition also affects a person's thoughts, behaviour, feelings and sense of well being.

Though there's no specific food proven to relieve depression, but eating a healthy balanced diet can help reduce the mental disorder.

And April 7 is observed as World Health Day with this year theme being 'depression'.

Here are a few foods that can help fight depression:

Fruits and vegetables

Include lots of fruits and veggies in your daily diet as it contain naturally occuring sugars and carbohydrates, but are low in calories that help reduce depression.

Walnuts

Walnuts contains rich amount of omega-3 fatty acids that helps to lessen the symptoms of depression.

Fatty fish

Fatty Fish such as salmon, tuna contains brain-boosting properties that helps to fight depression. They also improve circulation and reduce inflammation and your overall risk of heart disease.

Low-fat dairy

Low-fat dairy items such as skim milk, yogurt, low-fat cheeses, and other dairy products that are rich in calcium, vitamin D, and protein should be included in your daily diet as they are good for health, including fighting depression.

Whole grains

One should include whole grains and other healthy carbs as they can help reduce mood swings, anxiety and depression.

Dark chocolate

It is considered as one of the foods that helps to fight depression as it releases serotonin, relaxes the blood vessels of the cardiovascular system and boost the mood as well.
